How to read it

Three numbers that matter

Monthly expenses

What it costs to open the doors

Every dollar that leaves the business each month, before you pay yourself. If a line item is seasonal or annual, divide it into a monthly amount.

Cost per minute

Your break-even floor

Expenses divided by billable minutes. Charge below this and every groom loses money, no matter how busy the book looks.

Minimum price per minute

The number to price from

Expenses plus your target pay, divided by billable minutes. Multiply by the length of a groom to get your floor price for that service.

Pricing notes

Four things worth remembering

Know your minutes

Track actual hands-on time for every groom for 30 days. Your own data, not industry averages, should drive your prices. This calculator gives you a rock-solid starting point.

Billable hours are not open hours

Only count time you are actually grooming. Cleanup, phone calls, no-shows, and admin are overhead — they belong in your expenses, not your billable minutes.

Owner pay is an expense

If your take-home comes out of whatever is left, you have no price floor. Set the number you need, then let the math tell you what to charge.

Raise prices annually

Review every January. A 5 to 8 percent annual increase keeps pace with supply costs and positions your business as premium. Loyal clients follow a groomer they trust.

Need per-breed prices instead of a rate?

The Groomer Business Kit turns a rate into breed-by-breed pricing, factoring coat type, weight class, and groomer skill level — plus the waiver forms you need on file.
